The play tells the love story between Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan. This TV series adapted from a classic folk legend not only has a lot of changes, but also has modern lines and even hip-hop elements.

"Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan" tells the true love story of the prince Xue Pinggui who lives among the people and the prime minister's daughter Wang Baochuan who have gone through many hardships and is not afraid of power. During the reign of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty, Concubine Yu and Concubine Liu competed for favor. Concubine Liu gave birth to a prince, which prompted Concubine Yu to murder her. Concubine Yu took advantage of Xuanzong's absence and wanted to harm Concubine Liu and the prince. The eunuch Ye Xing fled the palace with the prince in his arms, while Concubine Liu committed suicide to avoid Concubine Yu's humiliation. Concubine Yu learned that Ye Xing had escaped from the palace with the prince in her arms and ordered people to hunt him down. When Xuanzong returned to the palace and learned of this, he ordered Concubine Yu to be executed and sent people to search for Ye Xing and the prince. Unexpectedly, Ye Xing was chased and killed. When he was dying, he asked the righteous Xue Hao to take care of him. From then on, the prince changed his surname to Xue and his name was Xue Pinggui.

Since the story of Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan spans 18 years, Xuan Xuan and Chen Haomin, who are over 40 years old, both started acting when they were teenagers. They were inevitably labeled as "pretending to be young" and were questioned by the audience.

Faced with various doubts, screenwriter Jian Yuanxin said that he re-wrote the classic story from his own perspective just to fit the viewing habits of modern audiences as much as possible. "Previously, only excerpts and Peking Opera have shown the legend of Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan, but many of the stories in the opera are incomplete and inconsistent with common sense, so I 'made a little effort' to compile Xue Pinggui's life experience. We also need to rationalize his experience while also adding new conflicts to the TV series."
